Hi I’m Rachel Mathews.
I’m the designer and owner of ORIGIN garden design I’ve been designing gardens for nearly 18 years (that sentence has made me feel old)!
I have designed many different shapes and styles of garden from traditional, formal, informal, country to very modern styles of garden during my career.
Background
An affinity with horticulture and gardens is in my blood. I grew up surrounded by hundreds and thousands of plants on my parents nursery. I helped out in the family business when it went from a wholesale nursery to retail (1989). I started out in the floristry department in the business, making dried & silk flower arrangements, it didn’t take long for me to discover my true passion – designing gardens. Before starting my own business, I was the manager of a busy landscaping company, running 3 landscape teams. I started my own garden design consultancy in 2000.
Why I’m doing this
I’ve set up the Successful Garden Design website specifically to teach homeowners how to design their own garden. There are many books on the subject of garden design but none of them in my opinion, really teach the ‘how to’ of garden design. So that is what this website and courses are set up to do. To teach you exactly how to design your own garden. I’m passionate about teaching in plain English, not designer waffle or academic speak!
Most garden design courses are set up for diplomas to become a professional. But that’s not very helpful if you don’t want to be a professional garden designer! If you just want to learn how to do your own garden and be able to do something yourself and not have to rely on employing a professional – you are in the right place!
