This Garden Design Show episode features the first quick-sketch challenge. In ten minutes or less, Rachel will come up with as many ideas as she can for a viewer’s garden in the UK.
You’ll be able to see how to plan a garden from scratch and how important correctly dividing the space in your garden is. Rachel will show you how to make your garden look more visually interesting by using some cunning design tricks. She’ll also show you how you can get a feel of the perspective, to help you visualise how your finished garden will look.
She will also discuss the costs of getting your garden built as well as how you can reduce costs to work to your budget. This episode also covers how to create a low-maintenance garden, that suits your home and tastes.
Rachel will also give you the answer to the question featured in the last episode and tell you how you can submit your garden to be featured as part of the show.

Really enjoying your show! I am sharing them on one of my boards on Pinterest! Cheers
Thank you Laurin – that’s great to know, I really appreciate you helping to spread the word! 😀
I'd like to see a garden which has plenty of space for children to play – to play football, put up tents, ride their bikes etc.
EXCELLENT! I am pinning this as well. Good Job Rachel! Your a natural. 🙂
Thanks Eileen, much appreciated! 😀
Hello
Thank you for your show – you fit so much into a short segment – I could watch it all day if it were longer!
What I would love to see is some designing with rectangles/squares and how to link those. I have an area
that is rectangular and it to me is much harder to get it to “fit” with the rest of the garden than had it been a
circle/oval ( I must be a circle person intrinsically !).
Kind regards and all the best for 2014 and your show
Joanna (Australia)
Hi Joanna,
Thanks so much for your comments, the garden I’m planning to feature in episode 5 (due out on 14th Feb) has rectangles, so hopefully that will help you… though, you can usually get circles to work in most circumstances, so if they are you favourite, I would still try them.
Best wishes
Rachel
Hi Eileen – thank you, I will try to get a larger garden with plenty of space featured on the show soon.
Hi Rachel,
I’ve tried sending a plan of my garden (which I think got through) but I don’t think the picture made it. Mine is a large garden which I would like to have a large space left for the boys to kick the football around and not have to put up with me moaning about them damaging my plants., and an area for colourful planting and private relaxation where we can’t be seen by neighbours. It would be interesting to see what you could come up with in your 10 minute sketch.
Christine
I'd like to see gardens dedicated to edibles–but done with beautiful design
Spookily enough Kim, that what's the very next episode covers – edibles in a modern garden – check back on Tuesday to view it!
your audio is missing
+kevin kelly Hi Kevin – try refreshing the page, that should do it. The audio is there.
Thanks a lot. I am going to do my own garden design (15 meters by 65
meters) for the first time ever and I was unable to think how to think :-).
Your videos are much more practical then anything else I have seen and
read.

Hi Rachel I just discovered your channel and subscribed. We are close to
buying a new house in Switzerland and are looking to provide character for
our very plain rectangular plot next to Bauhaus style house. The design
aspect is absolutely key! You made that point crystal clear! Brilliant! We
anticipate a mix of materials for the hard landscaping – wooden deck,
jurassic limestone, and maybe granite. We’re aiming for a lush hideaway as
well as a formal part as key elements. Initially on 2 sides at least it
will be open land. It’s going to be fun trying to create this!
Thank you for this great series! All the best, Rob with Danièle
Thank you so much Rob and Daniele. I am delighted to hear that you enjoyed the video and found it helpful. Thank you again and best of luck with your garden 🙂
