This Garden Design Show episode features the second quick-sketch challenge. In ten minutes or less, designer Rachel Mathews will come up with as many landscape design ideas as she can for a viewer’s garden in the UK, near Cardiff.
You’ll be able to see how to do a simple garden makeover on a budget. Rachel will plan the garden from scratch, giving ideas on how to best utilise the space in your garden.
She’ll show you how to make your garden look more visually interesting by using some cunning design tricks. And also show you how you can get a feel of the perspective, to help you visualise how your finished garden will look.
She will also discuss the costs of getting your garden built as well as how you can reduce costs to work to your budget. This episode also covers how to create a low-maintenance garden, that suits your home and tastes.
Rachel will also give you the answer to the question featured in the last episode and tell you what it was that made the garden modern and not traditional.

Great comment about not stopping the eye at the edge of the patio, please
continue and address what would be better/best solution? (plants to soften
the edge? ) 🙂

Thanks Scally. You can use plants to soften the edge, my preferred option when there is a change in level is to use steps to take the eye up from one level to another. In this instance there was no need to have the log edging, so I would just remove it and have clear lines of sight to the lawn in some places and planting, as you suggest in others.

At 15:35 you reduced the size of the circle around the pond saying
something in relation with the deck. It was not clear. Could you please
explain.

commented via Google+ so I hope you see the answer here! I made the pond
area smaller because it looked better – more in proportion to the rest of
the garden. When you cut into a lawn you need to do it enough to make it
worthwhile and I was only doing it a tiny bit which on reflection I decided
didn’t work – so I hope that answers your questions.

*I must say, this has been the best program in control of landscaping services since I couldn’t control help myself on it. They have really changed my life towards my house look because previously it was looking not too good. Loving this series – so practical… Actually think I could redesign my wraparound garden. Only problem – too many options. Would love to see some tips on blending in with the surrounding trees and landscape. I border a ‘busy’ lane, halfway up a hill, with one side of the house and garden bordering a wood. All my desires for a modern, flowing garden blending in with the edges of the landscape of more trees fight with a more naturalistic planting scheme. Strong winds and heavy clay and builders rubble provide further challenges. Will continue to explore with you and your series. Thank you
