Front Garden Design Ideas
In this video, you will learn how to transform your front garden. Professional international, garden designer, Rachel Mathews, will show you how to plan front garden design ideas in a number of ways.
She will talk about 2 types of front gardens, the purely decorative and the practical ones that incorporate a drive. You will learn front garden ideas on how to landscape these 2 separately and she will also let you in on a golden rule when planning to design your front yard, particularly for gardens that incorporate a drive. This will guide you in creating a much more interesting front garden.
Some of the gardens featured in this episode will show you how you can improve your front garden space to accommodate car parking capability and at the same time keeping the look of the front garden design pretty and tidy.
A nice front garden doesn’t have to cost a fortune…
Front gardens don’t have to be fancy and you don’t have to spend a lot of money to build it. She will discuss how one simple dominant shape of lawn can tidy up the look of your garden and how to make it work well with the look of the house and also how to tie up your garden’s landscaping to your surrounding area.
Also, this episode featured food-producing front garden which should give you design ideas for your own front yard regardless if it’s just a very small space. Another front garden Rachel featured is one that is low maintenance, where she made use of a simple wire fence.
She will also be out and about to show you different styles of front gardens and share her thoughts and give you pointers about how it can be improved. In this part of this episode, Rachel will talk about focal points in your front garden and how other elements of your garden should tie into it.

I enjoyed watching this video; it's amazing to see how subtle changes can completely rejuvenate the look of a space – very clever! I'm now wondering how long it takes to come up with these ideas or if, with practise, you can see how a space can be transformed pretty quickly. The results are stunning.
Thanks Caro! It all depends, sometimes it can take a few minutes to come up with an idea, other times a few hours. It does take a bit of time to then develop the idea to make it practical and choose the materials. Practice certainly speeds things up, as does working from a design formula. Great episode. Each garden had ideas and solutions I can apply to my designs. Really helpful.
The building conversion with the modern facade improved so much with your raised deck and wide stairs. And the circular planter works well to bring the landscape to that level and “cozy it up” in that space.
I particularly like the other new construction site where you used clay colored paving throughout, but arranged to have walkways, gardens and even additional parking if needed. It’s amazing what can be done in limited space,
I noticed you often use a hardscape feature like stone or pavers to border your gardens. It’s a great look and preserves the line design you originally created. It’s not too popular in my area, and I find it’s a hard sell despite the positives. It’s always sad to see the original lines you had in your design get lost (or changed) over time.

Thanks you, I’m really glad you found the episode helpful. Thanks again for suggesting front yards. I know what you mean about getting people to use pavers for border edges. The best way is to show them photos of finished projects, I find that once people can see how something will look, it makes visualising so much easier and they are more likely to take your advice.
Very interesting! I especially liked the part about the garden that faced a
noisy street – there is surprisingly few information available online about
how to design a front garden / chose the correct plants in order to reduce
air and noise pollution.

the horticulturist can do designing professionally or not????
Hi Ahmad, the horticulturist is specializing in plants. He/she can be a garden designer as well, but a garden designer and a horticulturist are two different professions.
