Beautiful small garden transformation

Garden BEFORE landscaping

The owner of this lovely small garden in Dubai wanted to create a magical garden for her family. Places to sit to escape the intense sun were also a must.

Here’s the design a designer came up with for the garden. As you can see there’s a lot of upright structures to create plenty of shady seating areas…

Small Garden Design Plan

Here’s how the garden would look from the patio.

Garden AFTER proposed landscaping

Does this design work though?

Is it practical to divide a small space garden into 3 sections and have so many upright structures?

Here’s what Rachel had to say… (click play to view)

Alas – I’ve been asked to remove the video because the designer in question didn’t appreciate having their work critiqued… which I can understand, in a way, but it is a real shame, because the feedback I offered in the video could have been helpful to so many people.

It’s a shame the designer took my opinion personally – nothing I said in the review attacked their work, I just showed an alternative way to link design elements together. We all have different design styles and I feel there is always room for other points of view. There’s no such thing as a perfect design!

The design methods I teach here at Successful Garden Design are totally different to what is taught in college – I show people a simple method of creating plans that flow and work as a whole entity.

There are some garden plan critiques you can see halfway down this page.

Really interesting comments, I like the idea of commenting on a design.

No mention of where north is, though perhaps being nearer the equator that is not important?

It would be nice to see one or two sketches of the suggested design as viewed from the house etc.

      Thank you.

Thanks Catherine – It is always good to know where north is for the designer, but plan reviews aren’t full designs plus with that amount of sun the garden will need shade created in lots of locations.

Good idea about sketches, I will see if I can add some to the video.

personally I think its too crowded and having been to Dubai I know how hot and dry it can get. Obviously lots of shade required but in my humble opinion too many structures. For me this design would work beautifully in a slightly larger UK (or northern) garden.
