Evergreen planting tips for your garden

Evergreen plants can often be overlooked and underused. In this week’s quick tips video Rachel demonstrates just how amazing they can be…

Plant Design Principles

When designing any planting scheme it’s important to consider the following:

  • Garden growing conditions eg. sun, shade, rainfall, soil type, temperatures
  • Heights you want your planting
  • Shape and texture

There’s a good balance of heights and shapes in this planting border at the Alameda Botanical Garden in Gibraltar.

Don’t worry if your garden isn’t in a tropical location…

There are usually plants that look quite tropical with large, glossy green leaves which grow quite happily in colder climates.

Evergreens are where it’s at!

As I hope you can see from the video, evergreen plants really do play a vital role in how good your garden looks all year!

Evergreens aren’t just great for the winter months. They help give form and structure to your planting all year round.

If you’d like to visit the Alameda garden, details can be found on the Gibraltar gardens website.

There’s more to creating a great garden than the planting though…

Please, please, please don’t touch a single plant (evergreen or otherwise!) if you’ve not yet got your design layout right first. Without a good design layout in place first, it really won’t matter how well you do your planting!
